Since the founding of the club, Chelsea have had four shields, all of them with minor modifications. In 1905, Chelsea adopted as a first coat of a Pensionero image of Chelsea, which obviously contributed to the team's nickname for those years, "pensioneros" and was held for nearly fifty years, however, this shield never appeared in the designs of the shirts. As part of the modernization of the club, conducted by Ted Drake from 1953 onwards, it was decided to remove the shield pensionero to change the club's image and to adopt a new escudo.59 emblem was decided to create a temporary which was used only for a year, and that was only the initials CFC.
In 1953, the logo was changed to a lion looking backwards and holding a staff, emblem remained for the next thirty years. This crest was based on elements of the coat of arms of the Metropolitan District of Chelsea, 60 of which were taken the lion rampant facing backwards and the staff of the Abbots of Westminster, former feudal lords of Chelsea. Also represented were three red roses, referring to England, and two footballs. This was the first coat to appear in the official clothing, since the policy of putting the emblems on the shirts was adopted at the beginning of the year 60.59
In 1986, with the club under the ownership of Ken Bates, decided to change the shield again as another plan to modernize the equipment and get new opportunities mercado.59 The new emblem contained a more natural and less lion heraldic yellow and blue, supported on the initial CFC. This continued for 19 years, with some minor modifications, such as using different colors. With new owners, and the approach of the club's centenary celebrations, combined with demands from fans who wanted to restore the traditional emblem, it was decided that the shield would change again in 2004. The new crest was officially adopted for the start of the 2005-06 season and marked the return of the old design of the lion holding a bastón.8 As in previous emblems, this appeared in different colors, including white and gold.
